🌳 Massive timber building, more robots and funding for forest owners

Hi and welcome to this week's newsletter from Forsler πŸ‘‹πŸ»

Autumn has arrived and the rain is pouring down, but our newsletter is here as always. In this edition, we explore an exciting new technology that's already far along in testing with very promising results.

We'll also take a closer look at Stora Enso's new headquarters built of wood, and of course, we've made some improvements to our platform since last time.

πŸ’¬ In this week’s issue we'll cover:

  • Foresting Tomorrow, episode 4: AORO, genetically modified wood and funding for small forest owners
  • In-depth article: AORO - The autonomous forest machine of the future
  • Success story of the week: Stora Enso's new wooden headquarters
  • New product feature: Give your forest owner free access to Forsler
  • For the curious: Dive into the sources behind the podcast πŸ€“

Let's dive in 🌳

‍

πŸŽ™οΈ Podcast episode 4: AORO, genetically modified wood and funding for small forest owners 🌳

In this week's episode, we continue our discussion about robots in forestry. This time, we focus on the AORO project: the world's first AI-powered harvesting machine. We review the project's progress since 2014, its current status, the technology used, and the safety considerations surrounding this exciting machine.

We also cover:

  • A $145 million economic aid package for small forest owners in the USA to promote healthier forests
  • Genetically modified wood for increased CO2 uptake and resilience
  • Stora Enso's impressive new wooden headquarters in Finland

πŸ“ƒ AORO: The world's first autonomous forest machine

In our last two newsletters, we've looked at the use of robots in forestry - with a healthy dose of scepticism. But a new project from Sweden is showing very promising results.

In our latest article, we delve into the AORO project, an autonomous forest machine that can navigate and perform tasks in the forest.Β

We cover:

  • The project's development since 2014
  • AORO's impressive capabilities, including autonomous navigation and log recognition
  • The potential benefits of autonomous forest machines
  • Challenges and limitations of large-scale implementation

Read on and learn even more about how AORO can be a massive step in the direction of autonomous forestry.

Stora Enso's new headquarters - a milestone in timber construction 🌳

Credit: Stora Enso

Stora Enso has recently opened their new headquarters, Katajanokan Laituri, in Helsinki. With an area of 23,000 mΒ², it's Finland's largest mass timber building.Β

According to Stora Enso, the construction has achieved a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to a similar concrete building.

The building is an interesting example of using wood in large-scale construction and could potentially provide insights into the benefits and challenges of using wood as the primary building material on a large scale.
